IU East Campus Climate Survey results

All students on the IU East campus were invited in March 2016 to complete a climate survey on sexual misconduct, assault, and related issues.

Survey results were consistent with those from similar studies at other universities. They confirm the vital importance the IU community's continuing commitment to combatting these serious issues, which affect a significant number of students—both before and while they are attending college.

The information gathered will help us achieve our goal of eliminating sexual violence from our campus community.

Results and data

Complete data and a summary of key findings can be found in the full report. As with any voluntary study, results reflect only the reponses of survey participants. Response bias is expected, given the sensitive nature of the topic. Repondents who completed at least 50% of the survey, were age 18 or older, and identify as male or female are included. While the data is not a complete representation of the experiences of all undergraduate and graduate students at IU East, it is important to our understanding of experiences and perceptions on campus.

Key findings

All participants felt valued and believed that IUE faculty, staff, and administrators are concerned about their welfare.
Participants reported high rates of feeling safe both on and around the IUE campus and in the area surrounding campus.
Graduate women felt more strongly than women undergraduates that there is a good support system at IU East for students going through a difficult time.
Sexual misconduct was experienced more prior to college by all respondents except women graduate students, who reported slightly higher rates since attending IU East.
Nonconsensual sexual penetration (attempted or completed) since enrolling at IU East was reported by just 1% of undergraduate and 8% of graduate women participants (much lower than the 1 in 5 incidence found in the most-cited relevant study, by Fisher et al., 2000).
Stalking was reported as the type of sexual misconduct most often experienced by undergraduates IU East (3% of men and 5% of women respondents), with 63% of women indicating that their stalker was not affiliated with the university.
18% of undergraduate women said experiencing an incident of sexual misconduct while at IU East negatively affected their academic performance, 46% indicated an incident t it negatively affected their mental health/emotional health, and an equal percentage indicated no effect on their mental and emotional health.
Most undergraduate and graduate women feel that the university takes reports of sexual misconduct seriously, and takes steps to protect the safety of the person making the report; 89% felt that the university would take corrective action against an offender found responsible.
The majority of participants know where to get immediate help and how to follow up with campus officials if they or a friend have experienced sexual misconduct; however, IU East seeks to improved knowledge about how to follow up with campus officials.
No graduate women participants—and only 4% of undergraduate men and 2% of undergraduate women—thought that sexual misconduct is a problem at the IU East.
At 82% percent, graduate women participants believed most strongly that they can do something about sexual misconduct, followed by 57% of undergraduate men.
Compared to undergraduate women participants (9%), more undergraduate men (10%) have had another student tell them they were a victim of sexual assault.
Undergraduate women were most confident (91%) in expressing discomfort if someone says that a rape victim is to blame for being raped.
High rates of confidence were reported among all participants that they would help someone under the influence of alcohol or drugs get away from a potentially vulnerable situation to a safe place.
